If you see one holiday film this year, put SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE on your list and see it now! This new film from hailed Brit director Danny Boyle opens this week in New York and Los Angeles and will open nationally around Thanksgiving.

SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE gushes with color and vibrancy and keeps you enthralled from start to finish, as we go through the life of Jamal and his brother Malik - two orphaned boys who grow up on the streets of Mumbai after their mother is killed by anti-Muslim faction. The film starts with 18 year old Jamal who is now one question away of being the champion on the uber-popular television show WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE? But, is he really that smart or is he a cheat?

slumdog game.jpg

Smart storytelling and great cinematography and excellent performances from newcomers DEV PATEL (Jamal) and FRIDA PINTO (Latika) make SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE one of the major highlights in this year's theatrical cinematic offerings. Inspirational and full of life and love, this film is destined to be a classic. Even the younger Jamal, Latika and Malik actors are amazing. SLUMDOG JAMAL.jpg

The Hawaii International Film Festival is co-presenting a screening series called American Immigrant Filmmakers on Profile in New York City from November 12 to 18. The series includes films by Christine Choy, Sherwood Lu, and Kai-Duc Luong. Read on for more information from the official press release.

THE VILCEK FOUNDATION PRESENTS
AMERICAN IMMIGRANT FILMMAKERS ON PROFILE

Six-Film Program Curated by the Hawaii International Film Festival

New York, November 3, 2008 - The Vilcek Foundation and the Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF) present the New York City premiere of American Immigrant Filmmakers on Profile (AIFP), a program that showcases the work of foreign-born directors and actors. This year's series includes three features and three documentaries, inspired by the unique experiences of immigrants from Cambodia, China, India, Laos, Samoa and Vietnam. The screenings will take place November 12-18 at the Vilcek Foundation's new headquarters and cultural space, 167 East 73rd Street.

Following the program's successful run at the 2008 Hawaii International Film Festival, the Vilcek Foundation is now inviting New York audiences to view the films as well.

"We look forward to introducing these films to a wider audience. The talented artists involved in these projects, both behind and in front of the camera, remind us how much the American filmmaking tradition owes to the contributions of immigrants to this country," said Rick Kinsel, Executive Director of the Vilcek Foundation.

The AIFP program was initiated by the Vilcek Foundation in 2007 in partnership with HIFF, as a way to advance the related missions of the two organizations. "No other medium is as effective in expanding and enriching our understanding of the lives of others, no matter how different," said Kinsel. "We know these films will go far in helping to achieve our goal, to increase public awareness of the importance of the immigrant influence on the arts and culture in the United States, and that of HIFF, to encourage a cultural exchange among the peoples of Asia, the Pacific, and North America through the medium of film."

The screenings are free of charge, but RSVP is required. Visit www.vilcek.org for show times, and to RSVP online. All film screenings will be followed by a Q&A session with the film's director and/or lead actor.

TAKE OUT
Opening in Los Angeles on September 19th
Laemmle Sunset 5, West Hollywood
Laemmle Playhouse 7, Pasadena
Laemmle Fallbrook 7, West Hills
Edwards Westpark 8, Irvine
Edwards Atlantic Palace 10, Alhambra

After a successful theatrical release in NY earlier this summer,
NY-based distribution company CAVU Pictures is set to release the
award-winning feature film "Take Out" in the Los Angeles market on
September 19th . The film is scheduled to open at the Laemmle Sunset
5 in West Hollywood, Laemmle Playhouse 7 in Pasadena, Edwards Westpark
8 in Irvine, Laemmle's Fallbrook 7 in West Hills, and at the Edwards
Atlantic Palace 10 in Alhambra, CA.

"Take Out" opened in NY on June 6th, and played there for 9 weeks, and
is now expanding into select markets nationwide this fall. "Take Out"
premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival, won the Grand Jury prize at
the Nashville Film Festival, and has played in over 30 film festivals
to date.

"Take Out" is a day-in-the-life of Ming Ding, an illegal Chinese
immigrant working as a deliveryman for a Chinese take-out shop in New
York City. Ming is behind with payments on his huge debt to the
smugglers who brought him to the US. The collectors have given him
until the end of the day to deliver the money that is due. After
borrowing most of the money from friends and relatives, Ming realizes
that the remainder must come from the day's delivery tips. In order to
do so, he must make more than double his average daily income. In a
social-realist style, the camera follows Ming on his deliveries
throughout the city.

"Take Out" was shot on location in NYC and stars Charles Jang,
Jeng-hua Yu, Wang-Thye Lee, and Justin Wan. Employing an ensemble cast
of both professional and nonprofessional actors, and filmed in an
actual take-out restaurant during operating hours, directors Sean
Baker and Shih-Ching Tsou utilize a cinema vérité style to paint a
distinctly human face on the lives of illegal immigrants lost in the
shadows of an uncaring city.

CAVU Pictures was started in 2001 by filmmakers Michael Sergio and
Isil Bagdadi to finance, develop, produce and distribute independent
films. Some of CAVU's releases include "Under Hellgate Bridge," "The
Holy Land," "The Real Dirt on Farmer John," "Trailer Park Boys: The
Movie", and the upcoming directorial debut of actor Robert Davi, "The
Dukes".

SEAN BAKER writer/producer/director of Take Out: "We set out to bring
the plight of the illegal Chinese immigrant to the screen as
realistically and responsibly as we could. We believe we have
succeeded in doing so. Making this film was truly one of the most
exhilarating, educational, and liberating experiences of our lives and
we're excited that CAVU Pictures is working with us in getting the
film out to audiences." Sean Baker's previous credits include the
film "Four Letter Words" (which premiered at the 2001 SXSW film
festival, and is being released by Vanguard Cinema). His most recent
film "Prince of Broadway", which he wrote and directed, won the 2008
Target Filmmaker Award at this year's Los Angeles Film Festival. It
was the only US film in competition at Locarno Film Festival where it
won the Special Jury Mention. Sean is also the co-creator of the cult
comedy TV show, Greg the Bunny.

INAUGURAL ID FILM FEST TO SHOWCASE FILMS
THAT FOCUS ON GLOBAL ASIAN IDENTITY, COMMUNITIES
SEPT. 25-28 AT JAPANESE AMERICAN NATIONAL MUSEUM

LOS ANGELES.--The inaugural ID Film Fest, a new festival dedicated to contemporary digital films that explore and celebrate identity crisis in the diverse Asian/Pacific Islander communities, will showcase an international line-up of new and first-time locally-screened features, documentaries and shorts from Thursday, Sept. 25 through Sunday, Sept. 28, at the Japanese American National Museum's Democracy Forum. The screenings are free to National Museum members and tickets are $5 for each film for non-members, with advanced ticket purchases recommended.

Organized by co-programmers Quentin Lee and the National Museum's Koji Sakai, the ID Film Fest will feature several Los Angeles premieres of features and documentaries that examine, explore or celebrate the identity crisis in our diverse global Asian community.

"What Ridley Scott has imagined in Blade Runner is already a reality. Los Angeles is a postmodern collage of cultures and identity. Even within the broader umbrella of the 'Asian American' community, there are Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese, Laotian, Cambodian Americans, just to name a few. Further diversifying the community are the division between first generation immigrants and those who were born here. A crisis of identity is inevitable and necessary even though we fantasize a more utopian unity," observed Lee.

Opening night, Sept. 25, features the Los Angeles premiere of Michael Frank's rarely seen Ra Choi, a drama about four Asian street kids, torn by poverty and drug use, trying to make a life for themselves in Sydney. Preceding the feature is Aldo Velasco's hilarious short "Jenny Tran (Not Her Real Name)" based on a real life Asian American female ecstasy dealer.

On Friday, Sept. 26, the Los Angeles premiere of Quentin Lee's first documentary feature, 0506HK, will be screened. The documentary takes a humorous and touching study of the vanishing identity of his generation of "Hong Kong people" who were all born when it was still a colony of Great Britain. Since the 1997 handover, that Hong Kong has ceased to exist. The evening will also feature three shorts--"All of Me", "Reverse Discri-Mission" and "Dimsum & Racetrack"--as part of the program, "Conflicting Passions".

Wee Li Lin's comedic drama, Gone Shopping (Los Angeles premiere), will highlight the screenings on Saturday, Sept. 27. This presentation centers on a Singaporean housewife who faces her mid-life crisis by escaping to a 24-hour shopping mall. The evening also features Ann Kaneko's comical and experimental sci-fi short, "Outer Limits Redux", which will be shown first.

To close the inaugural festival with the theme, "Fiction/Non-Fiction", Tony Toka's energetic skate poetry short, "Skate Free", will open the evening's program. That will be followed by three half-hour documentaries (all Los Angeles premieres), including Marlyn M. Bilas' "Shanti", one of the first films about Fiji Indian Americans and the story of a 21-year-old prearranged bride who is diagnosed with cancer; "Running Dragon", exploring the life of an aspiring Vietnamese Los Angeles actor who was adopted as an infant by an American family; and, Ling Liu's "Officer Tsukamoto", a gripping documentary that follows the cold case investigation of the murder of Japanese American police officer Ron Tsukamoto, who was shot and killed during a routine traffic stop in Berkeley in the 1970s.

"In America, we tend to lump different Asians into one group, both for the informed and uniformed. This festival is founded to explore both the complexity and diversity of the global Asian identities," explained Sakai, who is public program manager at the Japanese American National Museum. "We are proud to present the first edition of the festival and its films in our Democracy Forum."

All screenings begin at 7:30 p.m. every night at the Democracy Forum in the National Center for the Preservation of Democracy. The building is located at 111 N. Central Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90012 (directly across the National Museum's courtyard). Tickets can be purchased on-site. For more information, call the Japanese American National Museum at (213) 625-0414 or go to www.janm.org.

The new comedy from Oscar winner Jessica Yu - PING PONG PLAYA opens September 5th in SAN FRANCISCO, SAN JOSE, BERKELEY, LOS ANGELES, GLENDALE, ALHAMBRA, IRVINE and NEW YORK.

On September 12, the film opens in SEATTLE and HOUSTON! Please spread the word and send email blasts!

Independent movies don't have the marketing budget to compete against the mammoth studio movies, but what the film does have have is intense, strong word-of-mouth (just check out any of a number of the film's reviews--from outlets large and small, from critics, bloggers, and chat room posters alike).

We are encouraging groups of people to buy out blocks of seats on our first opening weekend in each of these cities.

Bring your friends, your family and your neighbors. The film is for all ages.

In San Francisco - on Saturday, September 6 - we have some groups of people buying out seats.

In Los Angeles there will be groups coming to the Mann Chinese 6 in Hollywood, the Edwards Atlantic Palace 10 in Alhambra, the Mann Exchange in Glendale and the Edwards University Town Center in Irvine. We could use more people buying out seats on all of the other cities and every theater.

And if you know of any friends w/ websites or blogs that want to support the film by putting up our banner ads, please download here:

Please help continue to spread the word and come check out the movie opening weekend (Sept 5--LA/SF/NY; Sept 12--Seattle/Houston).

Directed By Ron Oda & Kris Chin

Jim is a young closefisted Chinese American living in LA who desperately finds himself with a stack of white flower themed disposable cameras, fleur-de-lis invitations, a number of champagne bottles, and a ten-thousand dollar engagement ring bill. The only thing missing is a bride. In financial debt and miserable for having his fiancé leave two weeks prior to Valentine's day, Jim tries to resurface his dignity and wash away his wretchedness by asking his best friend, a Japanese hitman whose passion for cooking fancy entrees extends far beyond his kitchen, to kill him just in time to miss the Hallmark holiday. With less than four days to live, Jim, while wearing his wedding tuxedo the entire time, treks to the mountains to find his fate, meet a pizza delivery boy with lucky charms, the funeral spot of his choice, and a girl.

ASIAN STORIES won the Audience Award at the VC Film Festival/Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival and has screened to sold-out audiences at other festivals in San Diego, Hawaii and Chicago.
