PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE (September)
Quote of the month:
“You must give sometime to your fellow men. Even if it’s a little thing, do something for others- something for which you get no pay but the privilege of doing it.”
Albert Schweitzer
Hello South Florida Trail Riders!
I wish all of you are in good health and working your horses for the coming camping season. Andrea has set up some really nice locations and they are not too far away. So, come on out and enjoy the camp outs and see what Florida used to be like.
Hurricane season is here. I hope all of you have done all your planning and preparation. God willing, we will not have to use them. If you need any advise or information please call Peter Shaw. He has done an outstanding job getting information and ideas on how to prepare.
Your club membership ends on August 31st, therefore, all of you need to renew your memberships. Please do it as soon as possible so that you do not miss our great newsletter.
We are working hard at trying to raise funds for building a pavilion at Picayune. Jose and Maria are working on making customized wood signs to raise funds. The signs can be your horses name, a location or name of barn, etc. Sal Landa is teaching a class on breaking a young horse. Please come on out and attend and help us raise some money. The tickets for the raffle of the laptop computer are now on sale. It is a great computer and for $5.00 a ticket it is a great opportunity. Please support all the fundraisers.
The “Cowboy Day” at Tree Tops went very well. Mike and Deda did a great job. I heard everyone had a good time. I am sorry I could not participate and look forward to next year. The “Coggins Ride” went really well. There were around 70 horses that were taken care of. I am very glad that all of you took advantage of this program. Jacky & Peter have hosted these event for many years and I thank them for all their hard work and effort in always making it a success. A reminder to all trail riders that “a potluck dinner” is only as good as the food that each participant brings, therefore, always bring enough food for yourself and a guest or friend. In that way there is always enough food for everyone to share and enjoy! Thank you.
On August 11, 2008 I lost a very good friend and a friend to all the South Florida Trail Riders, Ozzie Alvarez. He was the younger brother of Manny Alvarez, one of the founding members of our Club. He embodied the Cowboy Spirit in everything he did. My deepest condolences to the Alvarez family.
See you at trails end!
Agustin Saavedra
OZZIE ALVAREZ
Ozzie passed into the pastures of heaven to be in peace on August 11, 2008.
We will miss him. He was a great friend to many and will be dearly missed by all.
We remember all the times he would ride his yellow horse on the trails with us.
Take care Ozzie and ride those horses in heaven!

MOONLIGHT RIDE
I want to thank all those people that showed up to “The Moonlight Ride” on Saturday, July 19th. We had 14 riders and two that came to see who was crazy enough to come out in the middle of the night to the outskirts of the Everglades in July!
When I got there, Wayne and Carrie had the grill going and everyone was cooking away. They had Citronella candles all over the place. It looked liked some kind of “ritual” instead of a cookout, but it did keep the bugs away.
Around 9:00 p.m. we were saddled up and ready to ride except for Rene who had a minor tack adjustment. At 9:15 p.m. more or less we started out the gate. The night was overcast so we did not see the moon until about 10:00 p.m.
However, when the clouds cleared it was really beautiful and the reflection of the moon from the canal water was gorgeous! We rode for about 4 miles to the old road that goes west. I asked if anybody felt adventurous, but there were no takers. I don’t know why…. the road was only under 6" of water and muck. We could not see what was under that, so we headed back!
Some of the riders moved out but others walked back enjoying every minute of the moonlight. When we got back to camp, they decided not to wait for my “twilight zone pancakes with blueberries”.
I don’t know why, I have never cooked them before so they could not have known how bad they could possibly be. I guess they were still full from the earlier dinner.
Maybe next time we will wait to have this ride when is cooler and drier. It was an enjoyable and interesting evening trail ride!
P.S. Maria Vidal, I was told that you bounce really good. Are you sure that Jose did not do it on purpose?

COVERED DISH RIDES
First let me say that are hearts go out to Ozzie Alvarez' surviving family. Ozzie was like a potato. No matter what your cooking, a potato goes well with it and Ozzie was involved in everything horse related. He surely will be missed... :-(
This leads me to my next article. I have been to a few rides and meetings and it seems that we are having a small problem with participation. Not with attendance, we have a good amount of people showing up to the rides. The problem lies with the friends that they always bring. Their friends name....MOUTH with TEETH. These guys will come and put a hurting on the enemy, the food. They devour everything in site. This usually isn't a problem as the enemy (the food) is there to be devoured. The problem is that there isn't enough of this enemy (food) to destroy.
We need to cooperate more when there is a ride and bring a covered dish to share. How would you feel when your the host at a party in your house and you have enough food to feed 12 people and then everyone brings a few friends and all of a sudden you have twice the people at your house with food for 12. It’s not a pleasant position to be in.
So please, in the future, if you go on a ride that asks you to bring a covered dish please do so. You can always stop at the store and pickup a box of chicken or even a container of potato salad. After all potatoes go with everything.. :- )
In closing don't get mad at the message. Just do a little bit on your part and a ride will turn out to be a wonderful experience for both you and the host of the ride.
Hopefully see ya on the trail.
Rene Gomez
COGGINS RIDE
Once again we all survived our annual Coggins marathon. This year I believe we broke all records and had Dr. Flores take blood for well over 70 horses, plus he did annual shots for a few.
We really appreciate him coming to do this, not sure that some of the horses realize why we do this but most did very well and cooperated fully.
Mike and Dr. Flores started in the south about 10 am and finally did the last horse, “The Babe” at 5 pm. This was to make it easier for everyone than having to trailer their horses here.
In the meantime Deda was making her world famous chocolate cake... in fact Augie, Carlos and Augie’s granddaughter who was riding Thunder came early just to try the cake before anyone else.
We finally got to ride at about 5 in spite of the stormy forecast. The worst thing we encountered was a huge swarm of mosquitoes which Peter said turned a paint horse black. Jorge Valle came with Justin and he was able to ride with us and my Cocoa who is at least 30 years old took great care of him.
While all this action was going on Tim McLennen who is a student of massage came and offered free massages. 6 lucky people took advantage of this and received wonderful massages. In fact, Ariel and Lourdes did not even ride, and Justin insisted on having a massage when he got back.
While we were riding Deda and her crew put together a nice meal of ham, salad and rice, we could have used a few more side dishes but no one went home hungry
Thanks to everyone who came and helped in the usual Trail Rider family way. We had a good time. Jacky and Peter

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE (October)
Quote of the month:
“You are never given a wish without also being given the power to make it come true”.
Hello South Florida Trail Riders!
Well, we dodged another bullet with Ike. I hope that our luck continues, but always try to be prepared. We had some great rides and events this past month and I hope that all of you took advantage of them.
The funds raiser done by Sal’s Colt clinic at Imperial Andalusian’s went very well. We had 75 paying participants plus we sold DVD’s of the Andalusian presentation and training seminar, along with T-shirt sales. Thank you to Sal and all that help to make this event a success. You all did an excellent job.
We are presently selling raffle tickets for the lap top computer. You can buy the tickets from any board member. If you are interested in helping to sell the tickets, please contact Andrea to obtain a book of tickets.
Your Board has unanimously agreed to name the pavilion at Picayune as a memorial to Ozzie Alvarez. We are planning a ground breaking ceremony some time in the next couple of months. I hope to see all of you there.
Our camping season has started, so bring your horse and lets go play in the woods. There is nothing like being in the trail all day and coming back to a good meal and a warm campfire.
We are planning a Moonlight Ride at Haulover Beach, but in order to cover the expenses of using the facilities, we would need 70 riders to participate. I would appreciate it if the members of the club would call me at 305-233-7927 or contact any board member in order to let us know how many people would be interested in participating. Thank you.
See you at trails end! Agustin Saavedra

NATIONAL DAY OF THE AMERICAN COWBOY RIDE
July 26th, 2008 marked the forth-annual celebration of the National Day of the American Cowboy. It was the third year for the South Florida Trail Riders of Miami-Dade and Broward counties. Once again we held our ride and picnic at Tree Tops Park in Davie, Fl.
In honor of the American Cowboy we also held our “ Cowboy Look Contest” only this year we expanded our horizons with two very knowledgeable cowboy historians to judge the entries. Ralph West and John Wilcox, both members of the Single Action Shooting Assoc. and the Gold Coast Gunslingers, came to us in fully authentic cowboy dress and added a new dimension to the event. Thank you gentlemen for your help. We had hoped to have a third judge Richard “Chuck Wagon Mac” McAllister but due to a last minute family emergency he could not be with us, hopefully next year.
The prizes were gift certificates provided by our good friends at
Griff’s Westernwear and Feed and Supply
6211 Orange Dr. in Davie, Fl.
Finish Line Feed 35 Northwest 3rd Avenue in
Dania Beach, Fl.
Sunset Feed and Supply 16300 SW 196 St. in
Homestead, Fl. and
Silver Palm Feed and Consignment 15585 SW 232 St. in the Redlands.
We extend a huge “Thank You” to them for their continued support and generosity.
First and second place winners were awarded to the Horse and Rider with the most authentic and functional cowboy look. It was a tough decision between Manny Alvarez on the Babe and Don Maines on Bandit but Manny ultimately took it based on functionality with his leather canteen and rope hanging from his Wade slick fork saddle, martingale, braided rawhide reins, stovepipe boots and full leather chaps.
Don’s outfit was very authentic including six guns and riding breeches since cowboys, until after the 1920’s did not wear denim jeans. Don won second place.
The prize for western couple went to Jacky and Peter Shaw, who favored us with a face-to-face whip popping display.
Rene Reynolds won for a very authentic bartender outfit complete with a bullhorn full of a clear drink she said was water, hmmmmm, vodka and gin are clear too.
Lynn Stine took the best cowgirl spot with her hat, vest, and boots, although I don’t think cowboys rode Paso Finos.
Jose Vidal cracked his whip atop his Quarter Horse, Comet. Handling the whip on a horse that never had the experience made him our winner for “ young whipper snapper” even though he only thinks he’s young, but he can surely handle a whip and a horse.
Jose and Maria’s granddaughter Rebecca won a prize for being the cutest and sweetest thing present, on the cutest pony. That’s how to get them started gang!!!!
In spite of the heat and the constant threat of rain (it stayed dry all day) we had over thirty riders, over fifty ate and everyone had a great time. Next year, maybe a parade. Let’s make it bigger and better!!
Mike & Deda Maldonado
HOWDY FROM CRESTED BUTTE, COLORADO...
We are on the beautiful Mill Creek Trail, with an incredible view of the Castles behind us. The ride was largely over 11,000 feet in elevation.
All the horses in the photo are related to the legendary Studley, descendant of Three Bars and Doc O Lena. Most are owned by our friend Doug Kroft of Crested Butte. Jacky Shaw is on Dan Weiss' horse Cochise, and Dan is on Cochise's full brother Hunter. Peter Shaw is riding Lucky, Doug is riding Missy and Debi East is riding Jose.
In the other photo we are having a lunch break on the Teocalli Ridge trail, at 11,286 feet -- again with the Studley family. We thank Doug, Clarke and Charmon Lehew and Dan for loaning us their wonderful horses, trailer and equipment -- and invite SFTR members to visit and ride with us!
See you all soon...ready for the next poker ride?
Dan Weiss

PROMOTING SPORTSMANSHIP THROUGH HORSEMANSHIP
The Western Horseshow Association of Florida (WHAF) is currently re-incorporating as a new not-for-profit organization in order to gain tax-exempt status to ensure that your membership dollars serve the Club to the fullest.
The new name of the Club will be the South Florida Horseshow Association (SFHA). This name change will also better represent the multi-discipline shows that the Club will host.
The SFHA will continue to provide schooling shows for the local community to improve their horsemanship skills in both English and Western disciplines, while promoting a fun, family atmosphere in which both youth and adults can gain the experience and skills needed to aspire to higher levels of competition.
It was anticipated that the appropriate documents needed by Tropical Park for the SFHA to host a show would have been received by the Club at this time. Unfortunately, the necessary documentation is not anticipated to arrive in time for the October show; therefore, the October 4 show has been cancelled.
The SFHA show dates, will be as follows:
November 8, 2008 January 17, 2009 March 14, 2009
April 18, 2009 May 16, 2009 June 13, 2009
The SFHA will be holding a membership drive picnic and annual meeting in October, which is open to everyone interested in learning more about the Club. We hope that you will attend and share your love of horses with friends, while learning about the exciting plans for the South Florida Horseshow Association. Visit www.freewebs.com/sfha in the near future, for more information, or contact President Valerie Brandon at 305-989-1963 with any questions. For more information, contact Valerie Brandon, President at 305-989-1963, or Donna Fries, Corresponding Secretary at 305-409-4144.
